Cleveland Rocks!  We have the most passionate sports fans, great food and even one of the Great Lakes in our area.  Surrounded by suburbs offering a variety of landscapes families tend to stick in the area even if they swore they wouldn't when they were younger.  If Clevelanders DO leave, they tend to come back... eventually.  What is Cleveland missing?  That's easy... in the past few years crime, lead poisoning and schools have headlined news stories and not in a positive way.  Maybe what we need is a focus on families and what family life COULD be in Cleveland.  Many people do not know about the many programs available right here in our backyard that cater to families and children.  Families who are struggling do not know where or how to get advice or help. 

 If we step back and highlight these amazing resources we will add to the already great Cleveland area.  My husband and I have a 5 year old girl and a 2 year old boy.  We both grew up in the area and have stayed here.  Yes, we get sick of the horrible winters, but our families are here and they are our support system.  As an Early Childhood Educator (that's code for a preschool teacher), I tend to know about family friendly activities surrounding our area.  I pass these on to my families at the preschool, but find that this information is usually unknown or unadvertised.  This is why I started this blog.

 I hope that this blog becomes a place where families in the Cleveland area can come to find information they need, resources and activities in the area.

Creating meaningful, learning activities does not have to take weeks of planning and lots of supplies.  In fact, it can and should be flexible and impromptu!  As a teacher I tend to have things that most families don't have lying around the house, but that doesn't mean you NEED to have these materials to create a cool experience! For example, at my house we try to incorporate learning into little things.  So when I make something new for dinner we go around the table and rate it from 1-5.  This sounds silly, but it's a great conversation starter AND a way to incorporate math into the daily routine.  Yes, actually using a rating scale and rating a meal is math.  Children are developing sense of quantity and measurement by deciding what to rate food they ate!  Want to take it a step further and incorporate writing?  Record it on paper!   Whether you are considering homeschooling or are set on it, this is great place to start your research.   We’ve stocked this post FULL of helpful resources, so you know which ones to at least start with.   It always helps to have someone sort out the information for you, right?  The following quality resources will provide you with helpful and accurate information.   Homeschooling 101- The How-To Information! My favorite go to homeschooling resource is the Ohio Homeschooling Parents website.  They also have a Facebook group- that has blown up exponentially since COVID! This is a place to get down to the legal,  “What do I have to do?” stuff.  They have “how-tos”, resources for curriculum choices, groups to join, information on assessments, and sample forms you can use! The Preschool Panic- It's time to send them to preschool... get ready to peel them off of you and run. Right? Wrong!

For some reason it has become acceptable to throw a 3 or 4 year old into a room full of strangers and expect them to "Go play!".  But this is not a good first experience with school.  So why do we accept it? It's August.  School shopping is about to begin and soon many families will be peeled away from their clinging preschoolers and told to "say goodbye" from the door.  I see the concern and guilt and worry in the many Facebook posts and memes and I ask myself, "Why do they think it SHOULD be that way?".
